If  you are looking for a break from fishing or enjoying the ocean, Hatteras Village has much to offer in the way of land activities.  The Village has a playground for the kids, a library for everyone in the family, a nature trail that is elevated over a beautiful salt marsh where one can go for solitude, bird watching, or just a change of pace.  Although attractions in the Village can be conveniently reached by foot there are places to rent bikes and golf carts for those who had rather ride than walk.  And yes, there are lots of shops for those who are looking for unique treasures to carry back home.

  Hatteras Village Park

Hatteras Village Park is a nature reserve located in the heart of the Village where Sea Breeze Trail winds through a maritime forest and salt marsh.  Both high marsh with needle rush and tidal marsh with Spartina lie under an evelated boardwalk that meanders through the park. There are free self guided booklets available that are keyed to animal and plant species that may be seen there.  The park provides free parking and bicycle racks for its visitors.  It is a great place to commune with nature.

Library

Located in the heart of the Village, the Hatteras Village Library houses an extensive collection of local research materials, cook books, literature, periodicals, and offers public internet access. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Open Tuesday through Saturday, it's worth noting the hours, as they change slightly through the week:

Tuesday - 10 am - 5:30 pm
Wednesday - 1 pm - 7 pm
Thursday - 10 am - 5:30 pm
Friday - 10 am - 5:30 pm
Saturday - 10 am - 12:30 pm

Located in the same building as the library is a wonderful collection of artifacts that have been excavated on the island.  They date back to when the Croatoan Indians inhabited the Outer Banks.  This collection is maintained by the Croatoan Archaeological Society in conjection with the University of Bristol, England.  Anyone interested may inquire in the library as to whom to contract to participate in an archaelogical dig.

Playground

The Hatteras Village playground is open everyday of the year for kids of appropriate ages to enjoy the swings, slides, and other equipment. A shaded gazebo is provided for adults who are expected to oversee their chidlren at play.
