Hatteras Village Civic Association Scholarship

The scholarship fund shall be known as the Hatteras Village Civic Association Scholarship Fund.  Monies from the fund will be used to provide scholarships according to the guidelines listed below.  These guidelines were revised in December 2004.

I.  FUNDS

A.    Funds are available to seniors attending Cape Hatteras Secondary School and/or residents of Hatteras Village who want to continue their education.  Applicants must be accepted to an accredited institution of higher learning or a technical/trade school.  If the applicant has received a full scholarship from the institution s/he may not apply for the HVCA scholarship.  Each scholarship will be paid to the school at the beginning of the sophomore and/or junior year or at the satisfactory completion of certified trade school      upon meeting the set forth responsibilities.

B.  Upon notification by recipient and validation that required responsibilities have been met, the HVCA Treasurer will forward payment to the appropriate school office or to the student upon completion of a certified trade school.

C.  Funds will be accounted for and disbursed by the school of the award winner except in the case of a trade school.

D.  Funds will be used for tuition, required fees, books/supplies, and other necessary school expenses.

II.  CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

A.  The scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of demonstrating interest in pursuing a higher education and community involvement.

B.  Applicants must complete and submit:

1.   A scholarship application.
2.    A copy of their high school transcript of grades. (For high school applicants only)
3.    A letter of recommendation from one of their high school teachers. (For high school applicants only)
4.    A personal letter of recommendation from a non-related member of the community.
5.    A copy of a letter of acceptance from the school they will be attending.

C.     Applications must be submitted to the school by May 1st and the applicant may be required to appear before the Hatteras Village Civic Association Scholarship Committee for a personal interview.

III.    SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT RESPONSIBILITIES

A.    The scholarship recipient(s), in order to continue to receive the scholarship assistance, must agree to maintain satisfactory academic progress (minimum GPA of 2.0)

B.    The recipient must forward to the HVCA, prior to the beginning of their sophomore and junior year, a copy of their school/college transcripts.  They must also provide the name and address of the appropriate school office for the recipient of the scholarship funds. 

C.    The scholarship recipient shall continue to demonstrate a positive citizenship effort.

IV.    TERMINATION

Should a scholarship recipient, at any time, drop out of school or fail to successfully perform their responsibilities, the remaining portion of the scholarship will not be paid.



Scholarship Guidelines for Adult Learners

These guidelines were revised July, 2011

 

The Hatteras Village Civic Association is supportive of adults who are returning to school to obtain further training for the 21st century job market or to continue their education at a higher level.  Therefore they have the established the following guidelines:

1.      The applicant must be enrolled in a program that provides further training for the 21st century job market or in a graduate program at an accredited university.

2.      The applicant will, after the completion of the first semester, receive up to $500 a semester for a total of four semesters.

3.      The applicant should present the tuition bill and transcript to the board so that a check can be mailed to the school or university.

4.      Adults who participate in this scholarship program may receive up to $2,000.

5.      The applicant must be a resident of Hatteras for at least two years.

6.      The applicant should supply the HVCA with their student name, student ID number, and address of the school or university.
