Preserve America is a White House initiative that
encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our
priceless cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the initiative
include a greater shared knowledge about the Nation's past,
strengthened regional identities and local pride, increased local
participation in preserving the country's cultural and natural heritage
assets, and support for the economic vitality of our communities.
Hatteras Village was recognized by this
national program in a ceremony on Capitol Hill in
Washington, DC on June 17, 2005. In a letter signed by Laura
Bush, Hatteras Village was applauded for its efforts to preserve its
cultural heritiage and natural beauty. Requirements for
recognition under this program include maintaining an inventory of
historic properties for public viewing, operating a community-supported
museum, encouraging active citizen volunteer involvement, creating and
maintaining a local govermental body charged with historic
preservation, and offering to local schools to teach the importance of
the local heritage and natural resources to children. |
