United Methodist Women

UMW Purpose

"The United Methodist Women's group is an advocate for the oppressed and dispossessed with special attention to the needs of women and children; who shall work to build a supportive community among women; and shall engage in activities which foster growth in the Christian faith, mission education, and Christian social involvement throughout the organization."

BUXTON UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

The Buxton UMW is comprised of women in the church who are committed to the advancement of mission service within the community and abroad.

Some of our local activities:

  • We support and encourage our church family with an annual dinner for new members.  We conduct an annual drive during the Christmas season called a Shower for Mary to provide needed items for young mothers in the area.
  • We organize needed help in times of bereavement or illness.
  • We visit residents of nursing homes on a regular basis.

We are active in global mission work through UMCOR and missionaries in the field.

We meet at the Buxton United Methodist Church on the second Tuesday of the month at 11:30 for a scheduled program, business meeting and bag lunch.  This is a time of christian fellowship and caring.

HATTERAS UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

Hatteras United Methodist Women began in 1937 as  the Women’s Society of Christian Service and was established by Sally Poe, wife of the Rev. J.R. Poe who served the Hatteras Charge from 1935-1937.

The membership began with 24 women and has increased to a membership of 65 in 2005.

As United Methodist Women, we strive to maintain the values and the programs of the National UMW Organization. We inspire to inform women about the lives and lifestyles of women in the United States and throughout other countries. We do this by promoting World Day of Prayer, May Fellowship Day & World Community Day programs.

We promote spiritual growth through our Call to Prayer & Self-Denial program. We also invite the island community to join us at our yearly Day Apart, where invited guest speakers share their gifts and talents, which inspire us to move ahead in our spiritual lives.

We are more than an island unto ourselves.  Our Pledge to Mission provides assistance to the needs of many local, state, national and global organizations. The availability of the UMW Reading Program enables us to learn how other women live and relate to their world. This helps us be better able to empathize with them. With the help of our sister churches and the public schools, we most recently completed assembling 118 kits for Tsunami survivors. These will be distributed through our connectional system of UMCOR.

We prayerfully support our church and community in many activities, raising money through our Annual Fall Bazaar. These proceeds reach various Hatteras Island needs and provide activities such as an Easter Egg Hunt for community children, Trick or Treat for UNICEF, annual Christmas Family Night, as well as other events.

It is sometimes hard to distinguish between the “hats” our women are wearing. They vary greatly: be it a United Methodist Woman, a Church member, a Hatteras Ladies Fire Auxiliary member, a Vacation Bible School volunteer, or women in the community. As United Methodist Women, we are interconnected in both the lives in our communities and the lives of those we love.
